Ain’t no more cane
digitalmaverick | January 4, 2009Each Sunday I’m going to look at either a Bob Dylan track sung in collaboration or by someone else, or a song by another artists that was inspired by Bob Dylan.
Today I chose ‘Ain’t no more cane’ which is a traditional prison song of the American South that he sang with The Band. In this case it is sung by The Black Crowes.
I’m enjoying listening closely to one Dylan song each day and this particular song grabbed me because I’d never heard it before.
Perhaps the most striking thing for me is the use of the word ‘Brazos’ in the refrain of the song:
“Ain’t no more cane on the brazos
Its all been ground down to molasses.”
which refers to the river that passes by many of the Texan prisons and so features in many such songs.

Hi Drew
Good to see you’re still alive and kicking. Topologika is, just. Times is tough for we wee still-indie software houses - and for most of the big guys, methinks - so anything you can do to channel people to our web site would be appreciated.
Good to see you’re a Dylan fan - me too. Last weekend my wife and I bought the He’s Not There film DVD which was excellent. We saw Dylan in Spain four years ago at an outdoor concert, where he insisted that all the big screens be turned off and said that if anyone took a flash picture he’d walk off the stage. They did but he didn’t - instead he just turned his back on the audience and played with his band as if he was in a small bar - excellent.
Well, if you’re still teaching, keep at it, and if you’re not, hope you don;t miss it too much. I still do, sometimes.
Best wishes
Brian Kerslake
